THE GRAIL REPORT

Issue #11

Grailers,

I was pleased to receive a lot of positive feedback on the interview with @mrthomas_world last week. That was great to hear that other collectors enjoy reading interviews and seeing collection pictures. Right now I'm planning to have an interview every other week, but I may pick up the pace if people enjoy it that much.

This issue we switch to a grail sneaker deep dive or the Jordan KAWS Grey and Black, and this is one of my favorites that I am also fortunate to have both pairs in my collection. Happy collecting!

Featured Grail: Jordan 4 KAWS Grey and Black

Grail Context

The Air Jordan 4 x KAWS collaboration stands as a modern legend in sneaker culture. It united Michael Jordan’s iconic silhouette with Brian “KAWS” Donnelly’s visionary art, blurring the line between footwear and art. Both the “Cool Grey” and Black colorways from 2017 are revered as grails for their premium build and cultural significance. KAWS brought his signature Companion motifs and “XX” branding to the AJ4, creating sneakers that felt like wearable art pieces. This collaboration matters not only for its luxury aesthetics, but also for its impact. It proved that a basketball classic could be transformed into a collectible art object, sparking enthusiasm among sneakerheads and art collectors alike. Nearly a decade later, the Grey and Black KAWS 4s remain coveted symbols of hype, artistry, and exclusivity in the sneaker world.

Release History

Air Jordan 4 x KAWS “Cool Grey” (2017): The grey edition launched worldwide on March 31, 2017, after a limited early drop in Greater China on March 28. It retailed for a steep $350, which was reflective of the premium materials and packaging. The release was tightly controlled via Nike’s draw system and select boutiques, meaning most fans never even saw a pair in stores. Despite the high retail price, demand for the sneaker was huge from the start. The Grey KAWS 4 came complete with special packaging (a KAWS print box and dust bag) and a matching suede hangtag, emphasizing that this was no ordinary Air Jordan release.

Air Jordan 4 x KAWS “Black” (2017/2020): The black colorway had an even more dramatic rollout. Initially, it was a Friends & Family exclusive and pairs were gifted to Jordan Brand friends (rapper Drake famously showed them off, and Travis Scott was spotted wearing an early pair) months before any public release. Rumors swirled if the Black KAWS 4 would ever drop widely. Finally, on November 27, 2017 (Cyber Monday), a surprise online release happened via KAWS’s own web store. Access was via raffle, and stock was extremely limited, making this one of the hardest sneaker releases to cop in 2017. Unsurprisingly, almost everyone took the L on that raffle, cementing the Black pair’s mythic status. In a last twist, a small restock in Asia in 2020 quietly offered a few more pairs to the public in a rare second chance that only a handful of collectors even knew about. After that, the Black KAWS 4 was effectively locked away in grail territory alongside its grey predecessor.

Market Profile

Since their releases, both KAWS x Air Jordan 4 colorways have been fixtures of the high-end sneaker resale market. Right out of the gate in 2017, resale prices soared well into four figures and the Grey pairs were selling for triple retail or more, and the scarcer Black pairs fetched even higher premiums. Over time these values have held or climbed. Today, deadstock (unworn) pairs of the Grey KAWS 4 typically command anywhere from about $1,500 to $3,000+ depending on size, while the Black pair often sees prices in a similar or higher range (it’s not uncommon for Black KAWS 4s to reach $2,000–$4,000 given their rarity). Both colorways have shown a stable long-term value trajectory: they’ve never really dipped below the early hype prices, and in fact as supply dries up, their market value has gradually inched upward. These shoes are considered “safe bets” in a collection – their grail status means demand stays strong years later.

When it comes to condition, most pairs circulating now reflect their age. It’s been nearly 9 years since release, so truly mint-condition examples are increasingly scarce. Many Grey and Black KAWS 4s in the market are lightly worn or have minor flaws from age (for instance, the glow-in-the-dark soles tend to yellow a bit over time). Collectors place a premium on pairs with complete packaging and accessories, given the importance of the special box and hangtag. Authenticity is another concern. Because these Jordans are so valuable, they’ve been widely faked, so buyers are extra cautious to verify pairs. Overall, whether new or used, the KAWS 4s remain among the most expensive and sought-after Air Jordans on the resale market, a testament to their enduring grail appeal.

Rarity & Provenance

By the numbers, both KAWS 4 colorways are exceedingly scarce. The Grey version was limited to select retailers globally. While Nike never confirmed exact production numbers, it’s believed only a few thousand pairs were released worldwide. That made it rare for a general release Jordan, yet compared to its counterpart, the grey pair is actually the more common one. The Black KAWS 4 is on another level of rarity: initially, only a handful of Friends & Family pairs existed (perhaps only in the dozens). When the 2017 webstore raffle happened, the stock was extremely low – likely only a few hundred pairs were made available to the public, if that. Even the 2020 Asia restock was very limited in scope, barely denting the shoe’s scarcity.

The provenance of these pairs often tells a story. Many Grey pairs ended up in the hands of serious collectors and resellers right after launch and those who got lucky in raffles either kept them as centerpieces or sold them to willing buyers at huge markups. The Black pairs, given their Friends & Family origin, were initially spotted on the feet of celebrities and industry insiders before the public release. Culturally, these shoes carry stories: they represent the merging of street art and sport, and each sighting in the wild or on a famous foot was covered by blogs and excited the community. Even today, if someone wears a pair to a sneaker event, it turns heads and sparks conversations.

Style Perspective

From a style standpoint, the KAWS x Air Jordan 4s are masterclasses in monochromatic design. Each colorway brings a distinct vibe while sharing the same artful details. The Grey pair comes in a smooth tonal grey suede that gives the AJ4 a luxurious, muted look. This subtle color allows the shoe’s special elements such as the hand sketches etched in the suede, the embossed “XX” on the heel, to be discovered up close rather than screaming for attention. The glow-in-the-dark outsole on the Grey version is literally a highlight: normally it’s an icy translucent contrast underfoot, but in the dark it emits a green glow, a playful nod to KAWS’s art that also makes for a cool party trick.

The Black pair takes the AJ4 in a stealthy direction. Dressed in all-black premium suede, it has a more understated, shadowy presence. The black colorway accentuates the silhouette’s lines and gives a canvas for the same KAWS Companion hand graphics (they’re there, just subtle in black on black). The midsole and upper are uniformly dark, so when the outsole glows it pops even more against the otherwise blackout look. It doesn’t announce itself with color, but those who recognize it know exactly what it is.

As a set, the Grey and Black KAWS 4s complement each other beautifully. Owning both is like having day and night versions of the same concept. The Grey can be seen as the more “public” face while the Black is the secretive, rare side. Yet both share the exact design DNA: monotone suede elegance, art-infused detailing, and that glow sole. In a collection, they’re often displayed together, emphasizing that you have the complete story of the KAWS x Jordan 4 collaboration. Whether worn on feet or kept as prized collectibles, the Grey and Black KAWS Air Jordan 4s exemplify a pinnacle of sneaker style – individually iconic, and even better together as a unified grail story.

The limited drop of the new Coscto Dunks was a lot of fun for the sneakerworld, although annoying for people like me who's local Coscto did not have the sneakers (and I sent my wife to try and get them). I'm not too bummed though, as I think they're a little plain and look hard to keep clean and clean after they get dirty with that material. Regardless, it was fun to see some serious buzz.
