THE GRAIL REPORT

Issue #18

Grailers,

With all the hype around the current raffles, potential backdooring, and April 3rd release of the V.A.A. Air Jordan 1 “Alaska” it felt like a great time to do a Grail deep dive on the original Off-White Jordan 1 Euro release from 2018 to learn more about what makes the original so special and why the new release has so much buzz.

Featured Grail: Jordan 1 Off-White Euro (2018) Deep Dive

The Off-White “Euro White” Air Jordan 1 (March 2018) is a modern grail because it fused Virgil Abloh’s deconstructed “The Ten” language with a regional drop in Europe that instantly became a hot commodity in the U.S. and Asia as well. It wasn't one of the original "The Ten" sneakers, but became one of the most coveted.

The V.A.A. “Alaska” Jordan 1 (April 3, 2026) is the first release from the Virgil Ablow Archive (“V.A.A. for Nike”). The sneaker is a near-1:1 recreation of the original, but with Off-White references stripped out and replaced by Virgil Abloh Archive branding, plus redesigned packaging and a new bundle of accessories.

Grail Context
The shared DNA between the two sneakers is “The Ten” methodology. It featured exposed construction, industrial design, and irony as a branding tool. It was all developed in Off-White’s landmark partnership with Nike and Jordan Brand.

The V.A.A. edition is explicitly positioned as a legacy artifact: Canary Yellow describes it as the first global release drawn from the Virgil Abloh Archive (over 20,000 objects) and a continuation of the Nike–Virgil partnership that began in 2017.

A key lore detail also comes straight from Canary Yellow’s official sneaker copy: Abloh’s “AIR” motif is rooted in him literally puncturing the sole to find the airbag when he visited Nike HQ, then deciding he’d label it.

Release History
The “Euro White” was officially framed as a Europe-first/Europe-exclusive launch: Nike announced it via Nike SNEAKRS (Western Europe’s SNKRS equivalent), with men’s and women’s sizing and additional EU retailers releasing alongside.

Culturally, it arrived with runway credibility. Complex reported the all-white AJ1 debuted at Off-White’s “Business Casual” show in Paris, after early on-foot glimpses through Abloh’s circle of friends.

The V.A.A. “Alaska” rolls out through Archive channels first with events and raffles through Canary Yellow and EQL. It then lands as a broader global release on April 3 via select retailers with various rumors of stock counts anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 pairs. Either way, it's a lot more than the original Off-White Euro allowing many more sneaker collectors to get their hands on the sneaker. Owners of the original pair range from being salty about it to happy for others. I'm an owner of the original pair myself, and I'm happy to see others get the chance to own the sneaker and the slight changes keep the original special as well.

Market Profile
The Euro White trades like a scarce artifact: StockX shows a last-12-month range of roughly $1.2K–$5.7K, with very low recent sales volume and a mid-$2K average sale price over the last three months.

By contrast, V.A.A. “Alaska” is already moving at much higher volume ahead of April 3; StockX shows hundreds of recent sales and an average sale price heading to the $500s if not lower when all the supply has been released.

Condition sensitivity is extreme for both because they are white-on-white: creasing, oxidation, collar grime, and missing accessories hit value hard, and “complete set” listings consistently command the premium, especially for Euro pairs with the full lace bundle and zip tie intact. The original pairs REALLY yellow over time more aggressively than most white sneakers, and most say Abloh intended it to be that way. I tend to believe that story based on the design, but perhaps I'm also justifying my very yellowed pair.

Why Re-Release This Pair?
First, it's amazing that the Virgil Abloh Archive is continuing Abloh's legacy after his passing and we are seeing museum exhibits and releases of products Abloh designed. The question many are asking, myself included, is why was the Euro White the first sneaker they chose to release? Was there some significance to this one? Was it because it was only released in Europe?

The official answer from the V.A.A. website is from Abloh's wife and now founder and president of V.A.A: "V.A.A.'s mission is to keep Virgil's ideas alive. The Archive exists not only to preserve Virgil's work, but to share it with great care and intention. Virgil treasured his collaboration with Nike, and the Air Jordan 1 was deeply significant for him. As a teenager, it sparked his dream of becoming a designer, and it was the first pair he designed for Nike."

However, Joe La Puma's Complex interview with Archivist Mahfuz Sultan provides more detail to put it all into context. He explains that when the Abloh partnership with Nike/Jordan started, Virgil first started working on the white on white Jordan 1 with an exacto-knife. V.A.A. wanted to do the first re-release by bringing out the first sneaker that Abloh worked on in the partnership. It makes sense. Others have rumored that it was going to be the Jordan 1 that was in "The Ten" itself, which also makes sense with the all-white aesthetic that fits with "The Ten", but that Nike decided to push the Chicago version instead. Either way, as a sneaker collector I'm happy to see more focus on Abloh's design work and this series of sneakers. Can we have the Canary Yellow Jordan 1 sample and Jordan 4 Bred samples as well? :)

A fun discussion on Reddit with people sharing what their grail sneaker is, and I was surprised to see so many people the Air Mag. While the history of that sneaker from Back to the Future 2 is fun, it's such an unwearable sneaker I'm surprised to see it as people's #1 grail. What's your grail? Hit reply and let me know.
