Featured Collector: Matthew Thomas (@mrthomas_world)
Give us a little background on yourself, where are you from, what you do for work or fun, and how did you get into sneaker collecting?
My name is Matthew Thomas, and I’m an engineer based in Northern Virginia. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, amateur bowling, traveling the world, and staying connected to sneaker culture. I first began collecting sneakers 27 years ago, drawn simply to styles and releases I loved. Over time, that interest evolved into something much deeper. I developed a genuine appreciation for the craftsmanship, innovation, and stories behind each sneaker—and that connection is what transformed collecting into a true passion.
Amateur Bowling! That's a fun hobby. How would you describe your collecting style?
I’d describe my collecting style as intentional and story-driven. I’m not just chasing trends or hype—I focus on sneakers that reflect strong design, innovation, and cultural significance. I appreciate quality and craftsmanship, and I tend to collect pairs that have meaning or represent a moment in time. Over the years, my approach has become more curated, focusing on pieces that I genuinely connect with rather than sheer volume.
What’s the most important sneaker to you in your collection?
The 2011 Jordan 3 Black Cement.
The Jordan 3 Black Cement is my favorite original Jordan model and colorway so I love that choice! What was your most challenging pickup and why?
One of the most challenging pickups I can remember was that same 2011 Jordan 3 Black Cement. I was traveling back to South Carolina for my birthday and to visit family, which made the timing especially difficult. Fortunately, luck was on my side—my good friend’s son, CJ (who is no longer with us), chose to camp out for more than five hours on my behalf, even though I told him it wasn’t necessary. Because of him, I was able to secure the pair, and it became one of the most meaningful and memorable pickups of my life. #RestInPeaceCJ
So sorry to hear that, I can see how that would make that grail even more meaningful for you. What is it about the 2011 Black Cement Jordan 3 that makes it your favorite? Was it the difficulty of the acquisition of it? The relation to CJ?
The 2011 Black Cement Jordan 3 is my favorite because it checks every box for me. The design is timeless, the history behind the shoe is unmatched, and it represents a peak moment in Jordan Brand. The elephant print, the black/grey colorway, and the overall shape just feel perfect.
Are you more or a collector or investor?
I’d say I’m about 90% collector and 10% investor. For me, it’s really about the love of sneakers, history, design, and the stories behind them—while the investment side is just a small bonus
I'd say I'm a similar ratio, I'm collecting due to the passion but also want to make smart financial decisions. As a 10% investor, I assume that means you sell on occasion. What triggers you to decide to sell a sneaker? On some releases, I try to double up—one pair to rock and the other to sell or use for future trades. Doing this has helped me acquire other shoes on my target list.
That's great advice as a way to get to wear a sneaker you love while giving yourself future optionality to have another fresh pair or sell/trade when it's gone up in value. How do you usually find your best wins?
I usually find my best wins through Nike, Footlocker, JD, Finishline, etc. and by reaching out to well-trusted for exclusive pairs. Building those relationships has helped me access some of the most sought-after releases.
What sneaker or trend do you think is being slept on right now?
Right now, I think On Cloud and Hoka sneakers are really being slept on. A lot of collectors are focused on the hyped Jordans or big-name drops, but these brands have clean designs, comfort, and unique styles that are starting to get attention—and I think more people are going to recognize their value soon.
What ON or Hoka models do you like most or consider grail-worthy?
My wife’s been raving about On Cloud for a while, so I finally gave in and tried a few pairs. Gotta admit, she was right — clean look, super comfortable, and that Zero-Gravity foam is next level. I've fallen in love with the Cloudnova 2.
What’s one sneaker you regret selling or missing out on?
The one sneaker I regret selling was my 2000 Jordan 11 Concord (deadstock).
That's a tough one to let go, all the way back from 2000. What pair are you actively hunting right now?
Right now, there are a few pairs I’m actively hunting, including the Jordan 3 PE Oregon White, Jordan 9 PE Oregon, and the Jordan 4 Grey Kaws.
I obviously love the Jordan 3 PE Oregon White. I also am looking for the Jordan 9 Oregon PE from last year. That's a hard one to find. What advice would you give new collectors today?
My advice to new collectors is to buy what you genuinely like and not just chase hype. Take your time to find the best deal before making a purchase. Remember it’s all about patience and right timing.
Thanks for the time! Happy collecting.

Air Jordan 6 Salesman Reverse Infrared 2026 Review
The Jordan 6 Reverse Infrareds releasing soon are getting a lot of love and buzz. It does feel like these are nailing a fine line between being too much like the original Infrareds but having some differences to make them desired.
Comme De Garçons Jordan 11s - Yay or Nay?
The first ever Jordan 11 collaboration (hard to believe!) is very polarizing from early reviews. Revealed at Paris Fashion Week, the CDG Jordan 11s are very plain but luxurious sneakers. This video discussion from Jordan Young covers some of the polarizing points well with some humor to go with it.
LeBron James debuted a new “Oregon” Nike LeBron 23 PE
LeBron James debuted a new “Oregon” Nike LeBron 23 PE featuring a carbon fiber crown outsole and Duck wings on the side that are a nice nod to the Nike Foamposite One "Oregon Ducks" that I covered in the last newsletter!
Top 8 Upcoming Releases - Any Grails?
Kicks On Fire outlines their top 8 upcoming releases. It's a pretty solid list, and I'm seeing 3 I'd say are likely to hit grail status. Coincidentally, those are the 3 I'll be going after!
Expect this year’s “Bred” Air Jordan 4 OG To Be Limited
Releasing on Black Friday, the Jordan 4 "Bred" OG is unfortunately expected to be a pretty limited release according to zSneakerheadz. These are a must pick up for me as I wasn't feeling the Reimagined version that was most recently released. As a side note, am I the only one who prefers the correct name for these as being "Black Cement" 4s?
Jordan 17 Doernbechers Are At Early Grail Status
Redditor Independent_Flan_721 shows off the new Jordan 17 Doernbechers, which appears to be quite a hit with collectors everywhere and the hottest sneaker in this recent batch of Doernbechers. The glow in the dark sole is nice...
