THE GRAIL REPORT

Issue #9

Hey Grailers,

It's been a bit but it was the holidays, some vacation, and a restructuring of this newsletter format.

Moving forward, each issue with either have a deep dive on a featured grail sneaker or an interview with a grail collector.
Along with that featured content, I'll include the best grail-related content on the web and social networks along with the occasional sneaker market data update.

I hope we can all learn more about grails and collecting together, and as always I welcome any feedback on how to make this newsletter valuable to sneaker collectors.

Featured Grail: Nike Foamposite One "Oregon Ducks"

Grail Context

The Nike Air Foamposite One “Oregon Ducks” is a true collector’s grail, revered for its fusion of bold design and backstory. Born from Nike’s deep ties to the University of Oregon (co-founded by alumnus Phil Knight), this special Foamposite carries the DNA of Oregon’s sports heritage. It features an all-over reflective “wing” graphic inspired by the Ducks’ uniforms, complete with Oregon team insignia on the tongue and both an Oregon "O" and Oregon webfeet on each heel.

Release History

The Oregon Ducks Foamposite was released on December 30, 2013 as a quick strike (limited release) drop. This timing coincided with the Oregon Ducks football team appearing in the Alamo Bowl that day in a victory against Texas, and indeed players were spotted sporting the Foams traveling to and from the game. Nike made the shoe available in very select Nike Sportswear retailers and via its website, with a retail price of $250, which was a very high retail price at the time. This wasn’t just a “Oregon Ducks” team/player exclusive, but a bona fide retail release bearing official UO branding (the iconic “O” logo and even a duck-feet emblem were embroidered on the heels). Production numbers were never disclosed, but the release was extremely limited and pairs sold out quickly. This history makes the Oregon Ducks Foamposite as much a part of Nike lore as it is a sneaker release, marking one of the few times a university-themed Player-Exclusive style was offered to the public. I was fortunate to get two pairs at the time of release, but traded one pair a few years back.

Market Profile

In today’s market (over a decade since release), deadstock pairs command solid prices. Recent sales range roughly from $400 up to around $1,000 depending on size and condition. The average price in the last few months hovers around the mid–$500s for a brand-new pair, reflecting sustained demand but makes it a very affordable grail compared to so many other grail-level sneakers.

Typical Condition

Most pairs circulating on the market are deadstock (unworn) or in very near-mint condition – a testament to collectors’ tendency to stash this item. Owners know that keeping them DS preserves maximum value. In fact, used pairs often fetch significantly less (on the order of 40-50% lower) than brand new ones, underscoring how much collectors prize a flawless Oregon Foamposite. After 12 years, issues like slight yellowing of the translucent outsole can appear, so truly fresh pairs are at a premium.

Rarity & Provenance

By all accounts, the Oregon Ducks Foamposite One is scarce. Being a one-time quick strike release with no restock or wider launch, the number of pairs in existence is very small with likely only a few thousand (or fewer) were ever produced. In the years since, many pairs have disappeared into permanent collections, making sightings infrequent. Beyond the university, a few high-profile sneakerheads have shown off this grail. For instance, NBA forward Markieff Morris (a noted Foamposite aficionado) broke out the Oregon Ducks Foams in an NBA game in 2017, turning heads on court and proving the shoe’s clout transcends college football.

TonyD2Wild goes through upcoming leaked releases and calls out the Fragment Nike fatigue that most channels won't touch. Are you feeling that way as well? I personally don't own a Fragment collaboration, but that's been more a price to value decision for me vs. not liking the sneakers. I like the simplicity of their designs, but that also may contribute to why they aren't worth the price to me. They often aren't too different than a similar sneaker that costs way less.
